Walk-in closet… Part 1

So I decided to get going on this walk-in closet project for this closet room, since its all cleared and painted and all.  After taking a look a closet building book, I came up with a design that would fit the wall which is this:

Its basically two shelving units with a dual hanging rack in between.  After spending an evening working up the measurements, I bought four sheets of 3/4″ plywood at Home Depot.  I am going to be using pocket hole joinery (which I’ll post pics of later) and no glue.  Even though these units are going to be fastened to the wall, I want to be able to take them down if and when we refinish the floors.  Adjustable shelves were important so using some pegboard and clamps, I made holes that you can stick shelf pins into for the shelves to sit on.

Here is one large plank stained with the light Walnut stain that I’ll be using.

I decided to try out a water based polyurethane.  I’ve always used oil-based but I read online that the water-based  ones have come a long ways and the drying times are really fast so I figured I’d give it a try.  Awesome so far!  Its has gone on really easily, it dries in an hour for sanding and it looks great!

Our new soon to be closet room!

We’ve started work on the small closet room upstairs now.  We plan for it to be a nice walk-in closet with lots’o’ storage.  First thing to do was install a ceiling light and switch on the wall.  I just tapped into another ceiling light in another room up in the attic to source the power.  Cutting the hole out in the ceiling wasn’t much fun since the plaster just started to crumble, but lots of tape and compound later… the ceiling looks great.

After all that work, we decided to paint the wall an ACE Hardware paint called Italian Marble.

Time for a break with Moxie

Moxie and I just chillin’ watching some tv between projects. :)

The square is complete!

Well, we’ve finished the painting on the entire downstairs (except the porch).  We used Benjamin Moore “Iced Marble” for the foyer, stairs, and upstairs hallway.  I did quite a bit of repairwork here and there as you can see in the pics.  Once we cleaned the old chandelier, I think we’ll actually keep it!

Allright here is the work done before painting.  The ceiling in the foyer ended up having quite a bit of detached paint from the plaster that just peeled right off with my scraper.  No water damage, just paint that was probably applied at the same time they were still making Model T Ford cars.  Anyway, there was also a crack in the plaster and it was detatching from the wood lathe behind the plaster that holds it to the ceiling joists.  I used plaster buttons to re-secure the plaster and then applied self=adhesive fiberglass tape over the buttons.  Then, a few coats of joint compound, a coat of primer, some ceiling paint, and it looks brand new. :)  I also had to reconstruct the ceiling edge going into the stairway, it was in really rough shape.

Here we are with the ceiling painted and one wall finished with Iced Marble

Needless to say, painting the stairwell was not fun.  I had to get a new multi-use ladder that could swing up into an extension ladder to reach to the top.

Here are some finished pics of the project.
