Kitchen Backsplash

Back in January we decided to finish a part of the kitchen with a glass mosaic backsplash.  We had designed the kitchen for one, but never ended up doing it.  Here are some pics from the install.  Its 1″x2″ recycled glass that came in 12×12 sheets.  The glass has a matte finish.  We used a larger tile for the top border by vent hood and the sewer shoot :).

Spicy!

The spice drawer that I ordered and spice jars came this past week.  The drawer was custom made by a place online that makes drawers to your specs.  Its nice because you can have a regular cabinet door but drawers on the inside.

Granite, Sink, and Cooktop… oh my!

Well, the kitchen is almost done!  The granite countertops were installed on Saturday along with the undermount sink.  I then installed the pull-out faucet, Insinkerator garbage disposal and Insinkerator instant hot water dispenser.  The dispenser gives instant 200 degree water with the 2/3 gallon boiler under the sink.  There is also a cold water handle for filtered water.  The filter is inline under the sink as well!  Today the pendant light from Landmark lighting came and I installed that above the sink.

The cooktop is made by Vintage Luxury Appliances.  The 2 18,000 BTU burners worked great yesterday for fast boiling water and simmering the chicken alfredo. :)

Here are some more pics of the Pot rack bar that I installed last week and the iTouchless automatic opening garbage can!

This is the Tivoli glass sample that we are going to be using for the backsplash behind the cooktop.  We’ll have to see if we will go any further than that.  It comes in 1 foot square sheets.  Here is the hardware that we went with as well.  It is a cross weave in Swedish Iron.

All kinds of updates…

Well, I really should update this more often, but the kitchen has been so dirty and full of stuff.  Tonight I am going to seal the grout so I figured it would be a good time to clean up a bit and take some pics!

First off, about a week ago I finished the oven installation.  It fit in pretty nicely, only needing a filler piece right above the oven.  It works great and was christened with a frozen pizza. :)

The last couple days has consisted of putting together the pantry and fridge surround.  I amr eally happy how it turned out, it really gives the fridge and pantry and solid/finished look.  Getting the fridge in the kitchen by myself wasn’t fun (Katie is in Chicago) but its nice not having it in the living room.  I also hooked the radiator back up and put the framing back around the window.  I had to make a new sill since I tore it apart getting the old one off.

The dishwasher is installed and attached to the side cabinets….. spotless glasses!

Hood Vent and Warming Drawer installed!

The granite guy came yesterday and did some measuring and in the meantime I finished putting the warming drawer in (Kenmore Elite) and the vent hood.  It is a Zephyr hood, model Venezia.  It has 6 speeds, 2 halogen lights and is routed outside.   I was able to pick it up off of craigslist a while ago for a steal!  It is so powerful, that when you put it on speed 6, you can literally feel the air rushing in from the dining room, through the doorway and up into the hood.  There were even some pieces of dirt on the “counter” that were being lifted up. :)  heehee

The cooktop is temporarily sitting there so that granite guy could see it and so I could make sure it would fit.  The burners and knobs are out in the porch.

Grouting and cabinets in

All the grouting is done on the tile now.  Its still not completely cured and I will see it in a week or so.  It took me about a day to do it as  you have to clean up as you go.  There is still some residue on the floor that has to be washed up.

Also.. all the cabinets are in!!!  They are from Ikea and these are just the frames.  They will be covered with doors and cover panels to give them the actual finish.  The finish will look like the corner shelf and the one pull out drawer in the picture.  Its an antique stained pine.  THe dishwasher is just there so I could get the spacing exactly right before securing the cabinets to the studs.  Today (I took these pics yesterday) I installed teh warming drawer and a few undercabinet lights too.  Oh yeah, the stainless steel wallplates are installed now too.

The granite guy is coming tomorrow to do a template, then Katie and I will have to go to the granite yard and pick out the slabs that we want.

New window installed

Today I picked up the custom replacement window from Lowes and installed it.  Dad E. and I measured the opening so it would have a nice tight fit when installed.  It went in really easy and works great!

All kinds of stuff!

Its been a bit since I posted, but a lot has happened.  Katie and I installed the floor tiles and we really love it!  I still have to clean them up from thinset residue and then grout them, hopefully tomorrow.  Once that is done all of the base cabinets can be installed.

Some of the wall cabinets have already been installed.  Basically you attach this steel suspension piece to the wall and all of the cabinets hang off of that.  Its really easy.  I’ve put up most of the crown molding too.  All that is left with that is filling in the gaps and putting a final coat of paint on.

Allright time to get going, we are going to a sushi bar for KT’s B-day tonight!

Painting is done!

Katie’s Dad just left today after being here for 5 days and helping out immensely with the kitchen project.  Its great to see how fast things go when you have another person working on things.

We spent the last 5 days mudding/taping the drywall seams with joint compound and then sanding the final layer.  Yesterday we finished priming the ceiling and walls.  Last night I finished painting the ceiling and tonight Katie and I(Tom) finished 2 coats on the walls.

We ended up using Ace Hardware paint and I’m pretty happy with it.  Its hard to get a feel for the color, but the walls are what is called “Ripe Oats” in an eggshell finish and the ceiling is just off of white with a bit of Ripe Oats mixed in to bring it all together.  I have to paint and nail the crown molding to the ceiling over the next couple days, but the really exciting thing is that our tile is in boxes in the dining room and ALL of the IKEA cabinets are being delivered tomorrow!!!  So, hopefully I can get the floor in tomorrow. :)
